Reserved Capacity

Students across campus are having problems with classes appearing open but not meeting the reserved capacity requirements and being put on the wait list after enrollment.

It is important to remember that:
  • Reserved capacities are placed on classes by departments who have controll of the class
  • Reserved capacity is a specific number of seats reserved for a certain major, year level, minor, concentration, etc.
  • Reserved capacities are removed at different times based on the department settings
  • Some classes have multiple groups of students seats are reserved for
  • Check reserved capacities before enrolling in a class
    • The way to see this is:
      • Go to the Class Search

      • Select the Section of the class

      • Check the reserved capacity

**If you do not check reserved capacity before enrolling you may be surprised you are on the wait list after you enroll. Talk to your advisor or the department that is holding the class.

Wait Lists FAQ's

How does the wait list work?
When you are adding a course to your shopping cart, check the 'Wait list if class is full' if you would like to add a course to the wait list. When you enroll, read the message to see if you have been placed on the wait list, and to see what your position number is. If a spot becomes available in the class, the system will automatically enroll the first positions from the wait list into the class.

How can I check my position number?
When you view 'My Class Schedule' your status will say 'Waiting' if you are on the wait list. You can find what position you are right next to that, under 'Wait list Position.'

Where can I find how many people are on the wait list?
Use the class search to find the specific class, click the blue class link for more class information. Under 'Course Availability' you will find the wait list capacity, as well as the wait list total.

Why can't I wait list a specific class?
Not all classes have wait lists. If an academic department has decided not to utilize wait lists, the wait list capacity in the course description will say '0.'

How will I know if I get in?
At this time, you will have to check your student account periodically to see if you get into a class.

Can I set up a swap with a class I am wait listed for?
Unfortunately you cannot set up a swap with a class you are currently enrolled on the wait list for. How you choose to deal with enrolling in different sections or possibly losing a few spots on the wait list to set up a swap, is up to every student individually.

I'm spot #_, what are my chances of getting in?
There is no definite answer for knowing whether or not you will get in. The higher the spot you are, or if there is a reserved capacity that will be lifted and is not full, the better your chances. Check back periodically through out the summer to see if your position has changed.

I set up a swap, and now I want to drop one section of it. Why is it asking me to drop both classes?
Although it takes you to a page that seems like you are dropping both sections, when you select 'Finish Dropping' it only drops the section you have selected.

Now that the new SIS is Live: Part Three

Now that you have started to fill your shopping cart, learned to navigate the new search, and other student center features, we want to remind you to do a few things.

First, check to make sure you meet the requirements for the classes you wish to take. You can do this with the new validate feature. Select all the classes that you wish to take during the quarter and hit the validate button located next to the enroll button:

The validate feature will let you know if you meet the requirements to take all of the courses you have selected. Unlike the old SIS, this system is clear with WHY. It lets you know if you are going to be taking to many credits, if you are not the correct year level, if there is a time conflict in your schedule, or if you are attempting to enroll in multiple sections of the course. There could be other reasons as well, these are among the most common.

Next, you may want to email or go in and see your advisor. In the new system they have the option to look at the classes that are in your shopping cart; however, they can not alter your cart. This can be helpful if you are weighing a few schedules and are not sure of which classes to take for that particular quarter.

We are also encouraging students to select the wait list. If you by chance forget to select the wait list option prior to putting it in your shopping cart, you can click the blue class number:

After clicking on the link you will be returned to the second step of putting classes in you shopping cart:

From this page you can check the wait list box and hit next.

The final step you should do before you officially enroll is to check back on the status of your classes. If you have an early morning appointment, check the night before your enrollment time.  If you have an afternoon appointment or have a late morning time, you will want to check earlier in the day to make sure you will have no problems at your enrollment time; whether classes have filled up, and you have to use your back-ups in your cart, or you know that you will be wait listed for a few classes. You can see the status of your classes here:
